SS Great Britain

This £12m HLF funded conservation of this famous ship provides an exciting and interesting visitor experience. An interpretation centre within existing dockyard buildings links with the ship via a gangway.  As part of the restoration process Fenton Holloway carried out a condition survey and analysis of the iron hull. This has involved the detailed examination of the hull and the development of a physically accurate digital model incorporating parameters reflecting the extent of corrosion in individual elements. The corroded hull strength was determined by computer analysis and strengthened, where necessary, resulted the structure being made safe with the minimum of intervention. Fenton Holloway were also responsible for the structural assessment and design of the adaption and structural fit-out of the early twentieth century listed dock-side buildings which house large interactive ship exhibits.   Winner of the Gulbenkian Prize for Museum of the Year 2006 Winner of the 2006 Institution of Structural Engineers Award [Heritage Award for Infrastructure category]
