Restoring History
The restoration of the massive retaining walls of Cardigan Castle involved a detailed structural survey, analysis and assessment, with the aim of removing heavy steel section shores erected against the walls in the 1970’s. The removal of the shores was accomplished by the installation of large pre-tensioned ground anchors and a complex wall pinning arrangement.
Built In The 15th Century
Castle Green House, built on the 15th century remains of the former keep, and the stables and associated buildings, were fully restored from states of extreme dilapidation. We were also responsible for the design of new structures as part of the income stream for the castle, including a new café which cantilevers over the edge of a section of previously collapsed castle wall.
The HLF-funded project won multiple awards including those from RIBA and Civic Trust Awards, and was crowned Channel 4’s Restoration of the Year 2017.
