Medieval Grade II* Listed Grain Mill
Conversion of this part medieval Grade II* listed grain mill (Ancient Monument) left in ruinous state by neglect and fire damage. Phase 1 involved the assessment of historic leats, culverts and watercourses serving the mill wheel; condition survey of the structures and mill machinery; and preparation of repair details needed to restore the building to a watertight and usable state. Repair incorporated the full reinstatement of timber roof trusses to original design and detailing, with lime concrete ring beams used to augment the wall construction.
Working With Architects
In Phase 2, Fenton Holloway worked closely with the architects on this confined and archaeological sensitive site to add a second building with connecting staircase to be used as offices for use by Devon Wildlife Trust. The principles of sustainability were an important factor in driving the design involving a ‘Green Roof’ and glulam timber columns. A separate enabling works contract was let to clear the site and strengthen a major retaining wall whilst allowing archaeological excavations to be undertaken.
